What The Future Sounded Like

In 1994, I wrote a history of Electronic Music Studios Ltd (EMS). I interviewed Robin Wood (who now owns the company) and others involved with it in the 1970s, and the resulting article became widely quoted in the synthesiser press. In 2000, I expanded upon the orignal text, and an extended version of the history was published over two months in Sound On Sound magazine.

Partly as a result of this, I was approached in 2006 by Claire Harris (Producer) and Matthew Bate (Director) to participate in "What The Future Sounded Like", a documentary that, in their words, colours in a lost chapter in music history, uncovering a group of composers and innovators who harnessed technology and new ideas to re-imagine the boundaries of music and sound. As well as interviews with the main protagonists of EMS - Peter Zinovieff, Tristram Cary, and David Cockerell - and enthusiasts such as myself, the documentary also features music from Pink Floyd, Hawkwind, and Roxy Music.

What The Future Sounded Like was developed and produced by Plexus Films in association with the Australian Film Commission, the South Australian Film Corporation, the 2007 Adelaide Film Festival and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
